Graham Noble
Norwell Mountain
Cabin in Winter.
This is a lovely
watercolor by the
well known Canadian
artist Graham Noble
Norwell. It depicts
a mountain cabin
after a winter
storm with snow
hanging off the
roof and icicles
dangling from the
rafters. The barren
trees in the
foreground are
encased in snow and
the cabin overlooks
the deeply forested
mountains in the
background. The
artist shows good
technique with nice
attention to
detail. The frame
is loose and does
have some nicks and
wear. The
watercolor measures
16.5” x 12.5” and
the frame measures
20.75” x 24.75”.
Norwell was born in
Edinburgh, Scotland
and in 1914 moved
to Canada with his
family. In 1920 he
entered the OCA
studing under John
W. Beatty, George
A. Reid, Aurther
Lismer and Robert
Holmes. He later
travelled to Paris,
then to London
where he studied
under Augustus
John. He exhibited
with the Ontario
Society of Artist
(elected a member
1924), Royal
Canadian Academy
and at the Canadian
National
Exhibition. He was
the only Canadian
painter to win the
Jessie Dow Award
two times. Norwell
died in 1967 while
living in the
Laurentain town of
Val David.

shanshuihua. Lit.
mountain and water
painting. Far
Eastern painting of
an idealized
nature. Although
landscape painting
is the usual
translation, the
term fuukeiga is
closer to the term
landscape in the
sense of Western
landscape painting.
The term sansuiga
is applied to
Chinese, Korean,
and Japanese
painting which
depicts an
idealized image
primarily using the
forms of mountains,
rivers, clouds and
natural features
such as rocks and
trees. One of the
three major subject
categories of Far
Eastern painting,
along with figure
painting
(jinbutsuga) and
bird and flower
painting
(*kachouga).
Although the
representation of
landscape had a
long history in
China, only in the
11c did it become
the dominant
subject of
mainstream
painting. Sometimes
called the most
characteristic or
the chief glory of
the entire Chinese
painting tradition,
landscape painting
is said to provide
not only a mirror
of the natural
world but a means
of expressing human
thought and
abstract or
philosophical
principles.
Although landscape
painting was
stimulated by
Taoist attitudes
toward nature, it
also served an
important role in
Buddhist and
Confucian contexts.
The Song dynasty
(11c-13c) saw the
development of
basic compositional
types and methods
of brushwork. In
the eyes of later
critics, the period
generated the two
basic approaches to
landscape painting,
namely Northern
School painting
(*hokushuuga ) or
the Academy style
(*intaiga ), and
Southern School
painting
(*nanshuuga ) or
the literati
tradition
(*bunjinga). In
Japan, landscapes
served first as
settings in
Buddhist paintings
as influenced by
the blue-and-green
landscapes
(*seiryoku sansui )
of the Tang
dynasty. In the
late Heian period
(particularly the
12c), with the
trend to assimilate
and naturalize
Chinese cultural
forms, Japanese
scenery came to be
depicted in
pictures of
seasonal themes
(*shiki-e ) and
famous places
(*meisho-e
).

A
lovely street scene by
renowned Ohio artist Shawn
Savage (1968-), this
colorful oil on
Painted by
Jung Wen. "A Crane perched
upon the overhanging
Chinese Pine and its mate
winging near the sun.. (
yaitu Jung Wen. Painted by
Jung Wen")". There are many
similar scroll paintings of
the evergreen pine trees
and of the crane's
longevity. In China, the
crane is a famous symbol of
longevity because of it's
long life span. This would
be a great gift. Giving it
away would mean you wish
someone success and
longevity. Of course you
could also give it to
yourself, It would look
great in your home or
office. The artist has
stamped the painting with
his seal. Chinese artists
always sign their paintings
with red cinnabar ink and
special stamps carved from
stone. Measurements 5.25 by

"A poem little

(Cubism a la Braque

Picasso - Ma Jolie
The still life Ma
Jolie belongs to a
group of works
created in 1914
whose light hearted
mood and elegant
articulation have
earned them the
name rococo Cubism.
The words Ma Jolie
on the musical
score in the
background are
taken from a
popular song of the
time. It was also
the name that
Picasso called his
new mistress
Marcelle Humbert in
1912. This montage

obvious and
delightfully
perfect addition to
your music room

frame has a small
dab of white paint

easily removed, and
does not effect the
art.

Incident: Chief
Logans Monument is
Located in Fort

Every Afternoon
About 2:30 A few
crows land near by.
Every dusk long
lines of crows can
be seen heading
into the Fort Hill
area from three
directions. By 5pm
they are joined by
about 40,000
friends and family,
and cover a few
city blocks. At
dark they move
downtown all at
once. Within
minutes the skies
all over downtown
become black with
crows. After about
30 minutes the
crows settle in for
the night. They
prefer the trees
along the outlet
near the water.
Some even roost in
the shorter fir
trees within 10
feet of passing
trucks! On 2/9/98
National Geographic
film producer Bryan
Cole waited on the
roof of the County
Office Building,
for the first crows
to appear. Issac
Sisson who was
Builder of Logan's
Monument born 1812,
died 1892. His
grave is nearby in

Inches. JEAN DUFY
(1888-1964 French)
From a family of
nine children, Jean
Dufy was the
younger brother of
Raoul Dufy
(1877-1953). The
Dufy family was
very open to the
arts, particularly
to music. From the
age of 14, Jean
exhibited his
artistic abilities
which were
encouraged by his
brother Raoul, and
Raoul’s friend A.
E. Othon Friesz.
Jean also painted
theater sets. He
enrolled in l’Ecole
des Beaux-Arts du
Havre, where he was
taught by Raoul and
then by Friesz and
Georges Braque.
However, Jean quit
these studies to
rejoin his brother
in Paris who
remained his true
master for the rest
of his life. Jean
had, at this period
of his life,
discovered much
from travels to
North Africa and
other European
cities. World War
I, in which he was
a horse-soldier,
interrupted his
activities for a
while. In 1920, he
exhibited his
recent paintings,
notably at the
Salon d’Automne, of
which he was a
member. Along with
Raoul, Jean was
active in the
decorative arts,
especially in
textiles and
porcelains.
Inevitably, Jean
Dufy’s work
continues to be
compared to that of
his brother. Jean
painted frequently
in watercolor and
ink. Like his
brother, his
subjects are often
Paris, other French
cities, country
scenes, circuses,
horse races, stages
and orchestras. He
played the
classical guitar
and was an amateur
of jazz, which may
account for his
paintings
exhibiting a more
fluid rhythm
revealed in deep
blues, animated
reds and greens,
and yellows that
tend to accentuate
light.

framed. Overall size 14 by

achient times Leather was
also used in the
preservation of the Word of
God and religious art
works. As an ancient
writing material, leather
was used since it was more
durable than papyrus. Made
usually from the hide of
sheep, goats, antelopes,
and other similar animals,
leather is acquired by
drying the hide under the
heat of the sun (this takes
many weeks), shaving the
hairs, and scraping clean
the surface for smooth
writing. Jewish regulations
(the Talmud) required that
a copy of the Torah had to
be written only on leather
exclusively made from
ceremonially clean animals.
Though more durable than
papyrus, leather also has
its weaknesses: it is
darker, and in time, it
dries out and slowly
crumbles away. parchment is
a modified form of leather?
However, it was more
convenient to use than
leather in many ways.
Parchment was much whiter
than leather. The animal
hide was soaked in lime
water to make it white. It
was then polished with
chalk and pumice stone to
smoothen the surface. Both
sides could be written
upon. It was also more
practical since a parchment
was "recyclable". Latin
codex rescriptus (lit. "a
rewritten book") is an
example of this recycled
parchment. Many manuscripts
found in the Cairo Geniza
were also in
parchment.
